About salesforce transit center

Within the Salesforce Transit Center, which is the central hub of San Francisco, space is open and light-filled. Tall, structurally expressive skylights — “Light Columns” — brings sunshine deep into the building, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.

The focal point of STC, and the solution to achieve it, is LITEFLAM XT 120 system; a walkable fire-rated skylight specifically developed for this project. This unitized multi-panel fire-rated glass floor system realized the Architects vision of ” light columns” which flood the Grand Hall with natural light.

The largest Light Column forms the central element of the 36- meter tall (118- feet tall) Grand Hall, STC’s primary public space. Reaching from the park, down through the bus deck and Grand Hall, and all the way to the train platforms two stories below grade, this dramatic structure will provide light and long views to all areas of the Transit Center.

The specifications put forth by Pelli Clarke Pelli was the most demanding for a fire-rated glass floor/ skylight to date. Some of these include: 2 hrs fire rating, blast-resistant, seismic rating, live loading for foot traffic and waterproofing. It is the perfect expression of form and function.

Project SOLUTION

Greenlite Glass Systems engineered and developed the following specifically for the Salesforce Transit Center:

LITEFLAM XT 120 is a life safety product made up of multi-laminated glass including steel supports. It has been tested and certified by UL to meet the strict ASTM E 119 certification as a life safety product;
Structural glass is laminated with 2 hr fire-rated glass. A sacrificial sheet has been added, so the top lite can be replaced if damaged, thus reducing long term cost;
The assembly includes main and secondary structural supports which are coated with intumescent paint;
Low E coatings have been applied to reduce the energy profile of the building.

Greenlite Glass Systems Inc. was approached by Pelli Clark Pelli (Architect) in 2008 to assist them with their vision of “Light Columns” which bring natural light from the main level down to the grand entrance. Our LITEFLAM fire-rated glass floor system was the only solution at the time, but I knew the project specifications and new challenges were going to be a feat of modern glass technology. Greenlite Glass takes great pride in being a key partner in producing the focal point of is landmark project. I could not have asked for a better project team; we are all very proud of our group accomplishments.
